Portland Basin, Ashton Canal

Portland basin marks the junction of the Ashton with the Huddersfield Narrow canal (towards the top of the photo) and the Peak Forest canal (to the right of the photo). The Ashton heads off in a SW direction (at the bottom of the photo). The basin was nicknamed 'weavers rest', so called as many weavers reputedly drowned themselves here during hard times.
